Parents, students and teachers have radically different views on the value of time spent on tests. According to a new poll conducted by Gallup on behalf of the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA), while 83 percent of teachers surveyed said they think students spend too much time on tests, 75 percent of students and 52 percent of parents said they think students spend the right amount of time or not enough time on them.

Students drop out for myriad reasons: They struggle in classes, have personal or family obligations, don't see the connection between school and their lives or, quite simply, the school environment has become unsupportive. A new report examines the use of blended learning as a strategy for pulling these students, aged 16 to 24, back into high school for completion or an equivalent credential.

Alaska is dumping this year's online assessments for its students after continued technical problems plagued the exam process. The maelstrom began when a major fiber cable was damaged by a backhoe on a university campus in Kansas where Alaska's testing provider is located.
